Keep voter listing open until I get ID, voter pleads with court

Merseline Awuor Onyango is apprehensive that she will be locked out of the ongoing voter listing process if her ID is not released on time/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 10 – A resident of Siaya County has petitioned the courts to suspended closure of the Mass Voter Registration exercise until she obtains her National Identity Card (ID) to enable her register as a voter.

In her suit papers, Merseline Awuor Onyango is apprehensive that she will be locked out of the ongoing voter listing process if her ID is not released on time.

This she says, will deny her the constitutionally guaranteed right to register as a voter and to participate in the August polls.

Awuor has accused the Principal Registrar of Persons of not giving her reasonable grounds why the ID has not been released three months after she applied for the same.

The petitioner claims that on several occasions, she has been turned away on grounds that the head office in Nairobi is yet to be process it.

She intends to register as a voter in Gem Constituency, West Gem Ward at Nyagondo Primary School registration centre.

Besides voter apathy in several counties, lack of (IDs) is another issue which has affected the voter registration exercise by many youths despite President Uhuru Kenyatta directing relevant agencies to expedite the issuance of the vital document.
