NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 25 – The Selection Panel charged with reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission will Saturday re-advertise the post of IEBC Chairman.
The panel’s chairperson Bernadette Musundi said they took the decision after queries on the suitability of some shortlisted candidates following background checks.
“The information received from some of the agencies raises pertinent issues and concerns regarding some of the applicants and their suitability for appointment to the position of chairperson.”
“The panel further observed that although it had received reactions from various agencies, the response of the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) was not sufficient to enable the panel to make an informed decision on the suitability of the candidates and is yet to receive information from two agencies that include KRA and IEBC,” she explained.
The panel has therefore urged those who are qualified and failed to apply the first time round but believe they are up to the job to send in their applications.
She however says there is no need for those who applied the first time round to do so again.
The interviews for those shortlisted for the six posts of IEBC Commissioners will go on as scheduled.
“The selection panel wishes to assure Kenyans that it is cognizant of the urgency in this matter and that it is committed to completing the execution of its mandate within the shortest time possible while ensuring that the persons selected for nomination for appointment to the positions are suitable and capable of discharging the mandate of the IEBC,” he added.
The panel had shortlisted five applicants out of the 15 who had applied for the position of the IEBC Chairperson.
Among them are David Mukii Mereka, Roseline Odhiambo Odede, John Kangu Mutakha Margaret Wambui Ngugi and Kirop David Malakwen.
The panel has also received 748 applicants for the position of IEBC Commissioners.
