The struggle, fortunes of desperate house helps of Kawangware

The training also involves personal etiquette and integrity.

“I didn’t go to learn these things at school. But I am a mother, I am a wife and I understand the little things that any home would need. These are jobs they are seeking out there and we identified the problem they have is because they are not trained.”

At the training centre where they meet every Saturday, the women are taught how to save the little they earn.

“We have a women group. We contribute 20 shillings every week and give it to one of us. We use that to buy food. Then we have another one which we contribute 100 shillings which when you get you can pay rent or fees. At the training we are given 300 shillings. We also get some food stuff because on that day we don’t work but come for training,” Khangali explained.

Karimi and her mother intend to train them for three months and award them with certificates.

The biggest headache for Karimi and her mother for now are how to get jobs for the women and how to sustain the programme to benefit other women.
