Nairobi, Kenya, Aug 4 – Three firearms were on Wednesday night seized from a house belonging to a former police officer linked to terrorism in Ruiru, who was planning an attack at the General Service Unit (GSU) Recce headquarters.
The GSU officer is said to have deserted duty two years ago and was under investigation over terrorism.
Police said the 3 AK-47 rifles and 178 bullets were seized at the officer’s house in Githurai 44 where his accomplice was arrested, but the ex-policeman slipped out.
Officers involved in the raid say they had been monitoring the former police officer for several months and believed he may have been radicalized at Riyadh Mosque.
“The man was under our watch for some time, that is what led to the raid last night but we did not get him,” one officer said. “We arrested his accomplice and we are now looking for him.”
Authorities at Police Headquarters confirmed the matter and were set to release a comprehensive statement later on Thursday morning.
