NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 10 – A Chinese tour guide accused of stabbing a female tourist to death and wounding her husband in the Maasai Mara has been arraigned in court.
Lee Changqin was presented before the Narok Law Courts where he was ordered detained for 10 days for police to complete investigations.
Police had told journalists that he was also a tourist but have since confirmed that he is a tour guide who has been coordinating visits by Chinese tourists to the Mara for more than 10 years.
Police say they relied on information the assailant provided to them on the night he was arrested.
The incident occurred on Monday night at the luxurious Keekorok Lodge during a disagreement at a dinner table.
In a short video that has been circulating on social media, the man could be heard explaining in fluent Kiswahili about the disagreement, but does not admit stabbing any of them.
“The woman unfortunately succumbed to injuries on arrival in a local hospital, while the husband was admitted,” Gideon Kibunjah, Rift Valley County CID chief told Capital FM News. We later established that he was airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.
The deceased woman was identified as Luo Jinli aged 45 while her husband is Dong Ya, 47 who is undergoing treatment in Nairobi.
