Matiang’i calls crisis meeting with clergy, school heads over arson

Fire incidents were reported in five other schools in Narok, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Isiolo and Nyando, raising even more concerns as explained by the TSC Secretary who urged students to resolve issues amicably.

“The Commission will continue delocalizing staff management of learning institutions to pre-empt conflicts emanating from vested interest. This will ensure principals are not perceived to be representing partisan interests,” she asserted.

With the escalating situation in schools, a cross section of leaders in the opposition are urging the government to declare the arson attacks in learning institutions a national disaster and seek a more practical and permanent solution.

NARC Kenya leader Martha Karua who is in United States of America attending the Democratic National Convention says the fact that the school fires have remained consistent, while calling for an urgent solution and must be declared a national disaster.

CORD leader Raila Odinga who is also in the US said it is time the school calendar was revised to help end the madness in schools which has led to the torching of more than 100 institutions.

“The government must immediately abandon the authoritarian policies it is adopting, announce a return to the old order that also respects the unique traditions of various schools pending detailed consultations with parents, teachers, Boards of Governors, PTAs, KNUT and KUPPET,” Odinga said.

“The government must assure Kenyans of the safety of their children in schools and be ready to take responsibility for any harm that may occur to those children in these unfortunate fire incidents.”

Statistics available at Police Headquarters show that more than 100 schools have been burnt countrywide in the last three months, with a similar number of students charged in court so far.
