MACHAKOS, Kenya, May 13 – Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has challenged the youth to participate in politics and governance issues saying power has never been given voluntarily.

Mutua who hosted the first ever youth convention in the county attended by over 20,000 delegates said the youth must seize the moment and be key players in the political arena.

“Today is a great day that the Lord has made. This amazing and large turnout to the first Machakos Youth Convention is a testament to the fact that this is a time for Youth. This is our time,” said Mutua.

He termed the convention a huge success due to the turnout of delegates saying the youth control the vote and have the power to decide who becomes the President, Governor, Senator, MP and MCA.

“I welcome all of you from our Machakos County and our friends who I have been told have also joined us. We have youths from Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Mombasa, Taveta, and Embu. I have also been informed we have youths from Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado and even Kisumu who are here today in solidarity with us, Karibuni to Machakos – The Place to Be, where the lingo is Maendeleo Chap Chap,” said Mutua.

The Machakos Youth Convention was also attended by Ukambani celebrities and achievers who included pioneer female pilot Captain Koki Mutungi, news anchors Lilian Muli, Ben Kitili, Media Editors Wayua Muli, Stevens Muendo, radio presenters Kalekye Mumo and Vincent Mutua alias Chipukeezy among others.

The celebrities shared with the youth secrets to their success in the various fields.

Sensational Kamba benga musician Alphonce Kioko alias Maima electrified the crowd with his popular hits and agile dancers leaving the crowd asking for more.

Mutua said the convention was historic since it was the first of this magnitude held in our county and heralded a new chapter in the social-political and economic landscape of our great nation Kenya.

He said the youth today are ready to employ new strategies to outsmart poverty, fear and helplessness.

“This convention is about change and hope. Change from the status quo so as to provide hope for the majority of our people and the youth in this county need to rise up and grab what is theirs from leaders who are daily squandering them for selfish reasons,” said Mutua.

He said the plight of the youth will be solved by them the youth themselves adding that they were fed up of being used and dumped and tired of power games by people who are already full and belching terrible fumes of tribalism, hatred and corruption.

“Youths have to seize the moment since they are the majority in this country. They are strong and should stop other people who play around with their lives for their own power acquisition,” said Mutua.

Machakos town MP Victor Munyaka, Tip Tip party leader and former Kibwezi MP Kalembe Ndile, Machakos County Assembly Speaker Bernard Mungata and over 60 MCAs from across Ukambani attended the convention.
