NAIROBI, Kenya, May 5 – The Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) chairman Babu Owino has been charged with assaulting a fellow student.

Owino appeared at the Kibera Law Courts where he denied the charge and was freed on a Sh100,000 cash bail or bond of Sh200,000 with similar surety.

He denied causing grievous harm to Mike Jacobs Odhiambo who was contesting against him for the SONU chairman’s position.

The complaint recorded with the police shows that the incident occurred on March 20 at the Shell fuel station in Kileleshwa in Nairobi, at the height of SONU election campaigns.

Owino was re-elected in the contested SONU elections that left over 30 students expelled, after violent chaos over the poll outcome.

Odhiambo is among seven witnesses lined up by police to testify in the case.

The case will be mentioned on May 20.
