CORD to hold peaceful protests at IEBC offices countrywide

He said Justice Isaac Lenaola’s orders were clear that people have the right to demonstrate, but they should do so peacefully, without using force.

“We intend to hold a peaceful protest. We appeal to all our supporters joining this march countrywide to be peaceful. In fact we direct all to carry white handkerchiefs in show of peace,” Orengo added.

The order was issued after Jubilee Coalition MPs Dennis Waweru (Dagoretti South), Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete), Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Kimani Ichung’wa (Kikuyu) and Alice Ng’ang’a moved to court seeking that the CORD leaders be stopped from protesting.

CORD Principals Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula on Friday temporarily suspended all political activities in honour of the late former first lady Lucy Kibaki who passed away on Tuesday.

On Monday, April 25, Odinga and his opposition brigade engaged police in running battles outside the IEBC’s headquarters in Nairobi.

Police were forced to use teargas to disperse the surging crowd that threatened to pull down the main entrance to Anniversary Towers, where IEBC is housed.

However Orengo urged the police officers who will be deployed at the demonstration to exercise restraint and avoid provoking those who will turn up for the peaceful protest.

“We appeal to security forces to give us security and refrain from actions that may ruin the peace. We are not and we shall never be enemies of Kenya. We shall always abide by the Constitution that we fought so hard for. The security forces and the government must facilitate our citizens to keep this noble pledge,” Orengo stated.
