Besieged IEBC chiefs reject mediation offer, vow to stay in office

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and the Centre for Multiparty Democracy similarly noted that failure to address problems facing the electoral commission and the Judiciary was a recipe for a shambolic election.

MPs Olago Aluoch (Kisumu Town West), Alfred Keter (Nandi Hills), Paul Bii (Chepalungu) and William Cheptumo (Baringo North) pleaded with the IEBC commissioners to consider a negotiated exit citing that the next year’s General Election could be chaotic if credibility issues were not dealt with.

The meeting between the MPs and IEBC had earlier in the day been disrupted and forced to go into a 30 minute in-camera session after CORD MPs said the meeting could not proceed until the matter of extrajudicial killings in Monday’s CORD protests was addressed.

IEBC officials and the media were ordered out of Parliament’s Chamber after the CORD legislators Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town), David Ochieng (Ugenya), Jared Opiyo (Muhoroni) Fred Outa (Nyando) and Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale demanded that Hassan and his team resign first.

The IEBC commissioners were appearing before the committee to discuss the status of the Referendum Law review, and the electoral body’s position on Public Accounts Committee report.
