NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 7 – Kenya and Ethiopia will Monday launch a new initiative aimed at ending the perennial conflict between warring communities at the border point where hundreds of people have been killed in the past.

The deal will be launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn which will be coordinated by the County Governments of Marsabit and Oromia in Ethiopia.

Kenyan security forces have in the past accused members of the Oromo Liberation Front of persistent attacks on locals at the border, as well as security forces.

The new security initiative is spearheaded by United Nations agencies which are keen to ensure long lasting peace at the border area; weeks after three police officers were gunned down by OLF members.

The United Nations Development Programme which is coordinating the peace initiative said it will help empower local communities economically through a judicious mix of socio-economic transformative programs that include infrastructure, pastoral/agro-pastoral economic development, socio-economic and tourism development.
