NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 10 – A Nakumatt Supermarkets manager on Tuesday afternoon shot and killed a junior employee during a confrontation at the retail chain’s headquarters on Mombasa Road.

Police said they were called to the scene following the incident that involved the supermarket chain’s Transport Manager.

Police have already disarmed the man who said he opened fire in self defence, after the deceased allegedly charged at him and other employees with a machete.

“The information we have received from officers who visited the scene is that the man was running around with a machete from the stores area and was chasing fellow employees,” a senior police officer briefed about the incident said. “That is when the Transport Manager opened fire when he also charged at him and he was killed.”

Nairobi Police chief Japheth Koome, when reached for comment over the incident said: “We have had such an incident at Nakumatt Headquarters on Mombasa Road and it is under investigation.” He did not provide more details.

“An investigation on the killing has been launched and all those who witnessed it will be questioned as we seek to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

There was no immediate official comment from Nakumatt Holdings which runs the largest supermarket chain in Kenya and neighbouring countries.
