NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 5 – President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has travelled to Dar-es-Salaam to attend the inauguration ceremony of Tanzania’s President-elect John Pombe Magufuli.
The President and the First Lady were seen off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Deputy President William Ruto.
The plane carrying the President and the First Lady departed the airport shortly before 9.00 am.
Magufuli was declared winner of the hotly contested poll last week by the country’s electoral commission.
Magufuli’s running mate Samia Suluhu Hassan, will become the first female vice president of Tanzania.
The opposition rejected the result, claiming victory itself, while the Zanzibar archipelago annulled polls over irregularities.
Minister of works in the last government – for which he earned the nickname “The Bulldozer” – Magufuli was not initially seen as a frontrunner, but won the CCM nomination from a field of nearly 40 other candidates.
He succeeds President Jakaya Kikwete, who stepped down from power having served his constitutional two-term limit.
