JAP wades into Ruto Hague ‘fixing’ claims

Karani who was flanked by ODM MPs Opiyo Wandayi (ODM Political Affairs Secretary), Busia County Woman Representative Florence Mutua (ODM National Deputy Organizing Secretary), Nominated Oburu Oginga, Seme MP James Nyikal and Siaya County Woman Representative Dr Christine Ombaka, claimed Kuria was seconded to PNU Presidential Campaign which Kenyatta has joined when he agreed to support Mwai Kibaki’s bid for a second term.

According to ODM, claims by the Gatundu South MP that PNU funded the procuring of witnesses were untrue. Karani said PNU was cash strapped after its accounts were looted dry.

“We all know that immediately after the elections, the bank accounts of PNU were looted by its officials and cronies of President Kibaki. PNU was left broke. It never paid its suppliers for campaign materials or its employees after the election. It had no money for procuring witnesses which Moses Kuria was engaged in. The money for procuring witnesses came from the UK Centre.”

ODM had called the news conference to release a dossier on why it believes President Uhuru Kenyatta fixed Ruto.

The Opposition claimed the Kenyatta has done nothing to make sure the case facing Ruto ends.

They claimed that the then NIS Director Michael Gichangi submitted “critical evidence” against Ruto, and gave a dossier – to the Commission of Inquiry on the Post Election Violence – that implicated him on July 21, 2008.

She said the ICC relied on the evidence to confirm crimes against humanity charges against Ruto, and that Gichangi’s name was submitted to the court as one of the witnesses for Kenyatta.

“In November 2013, long after Ruto and URP had assisted Uhuru to become president, Ruto asked Uhuru to let him have evidence held by NIS. The evidence was to assist Ruto in his defence. Uhuru refused, even despite the fact that Ruto was now Deputy President and was entitled to receive any information he need from NIS,” she said.

Karani further said the ICC named Ambassador Francis Muthaura, the then Head of the Civil Service, as a suspect, but the government “shopped” for a lawyer to represent him.

“The lawyer sourced and retained by the government was Karim Khan. Once the charges against Ruto were confirmed, the PNU/Uhuru faction convinced Ruto that Khan was the lawyer that would help him and that he should reject ODM’s offer of George Oraro who had managed to free Henry Kosgey. Until this day, Karim is paid by Uhuru and his government and Ruto’s case keeps going from bad to worse,” she said.
