“We cannot allow people to form land-buying companies to fleece unsuspecting Kenyans of their hard-earned money,” President Kenyatta said.
MURANGA, Kenya, Sep 16 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has frozen registration of new land-buying companies in the country.
He said new land-buying firms will only be registered after regulations governing them are formulated and approved by Parliament.
President Kenyatta also directed that all existing land-buying companies to register afresh with the Lands Ministry with immediate effect.
“We cannot allow people to form land-buying companies to fleece unsuspecting Kenyans of their hard-earned money,” President Kenyatta said.
He was speaking Wednesday when he launched the issuance of 3411 title deeds to shareholders of Kihiu Mwiri land-buying company in Muranga County.
Issuance of the documents is expected to assist in ending leadership wrangles that have claimed lives of several company directors with 16 former and current directors currently facing charges for the murder of the officials.
He noted that although the establishment of land-buying companies had good intentions in the beginning, the process was hijacked by greedy get-rich quick individuals.
He warned corrupt national and county government officials colluding with land-buying companies that their days are numbered, saying the era of falsifying documents to deny genuine land owners their rights has come to an end.
“Many Kenyans have lost their lives fighting for registration of their parcels of land and issuance of title deeds, a trend that will no longer be entertained,” President Kenyatta said.
He said the government was determined to ensure that land in the custody of all existing land-buying companies is expeditiously demarcated and titles issued to the rightful beneficiaries.
He also assured Kenyans that criminals who took part in killing innocent land owners will be tracked by the Government and punished according to the law.
He commended national and county government officials involved in demarcation and processing of Kihiu Mwiri title deeds for a job well done. He asked them to remain in Muranga County to resolve the remaining land disputes and ensure land owners get their title deeds.
President Kenyatta also advised land owners to use the title deeds for economic activities that would uplift their living standards.
“Do not rush to use your title deeds to marry more wives but ensure that the future of your current families are secured,” he added.
President Kenyatta ordered the police to arrest anybody misusing his name to collect money from unsuspecting citizens in need of land.
