, NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 7 – Two top officials of China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) arrested last week over bribery are expected to appear in court this week.
The two CRBC managers were arrested while bribing officials of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
A statement from the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission says the managers were arrested in Emali and Taru on the Mombasa highway on Friday and Saturday.
“On Friday, 4th September 2015, officers from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested Tang Ju, a Chinese Engineer/Liaison officer for China Road and Bridge Corporation for offering and giving a bribe to an officer working for the Kenya National Highways Authority so as to forbear pressing charges of overloading,” read part of EACC statement.
Tang is accused of giving a Sh100,000 bribe to a government official in exchange for a truck belonging to the construction company which had been detained due to overloading.
The other official, Liu Yabin, a Chinese Liaison officer was arrested the next day and booked at Taru police station and later released on a cash bail of Sh60, 000.
He had offered a Sh30,000 bribe.
According to the statement from the anti-graft watchdog, Liu will take plea at the Mombasa Anti-Corruption court this Friday while his colleague who was booked at the Emali Police station and later released on a cash bail of Sh200,000 will take plea at the Machakos Anti-Corruption court Tuesday.
Passports belonging to the two Chinese nationals were confiscated to ensure they do not leave the country.
The company is involved in the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway and is said to have been ferrying equipment to construction sites.
