Namwamba files motion on 50% pay cut for public officers

He decried the fact that 52 percent of the country’s revenues were lost in public wages way above the global average of 35 percent terming the current difference in the wage structure ‘immoral’ and unjustifiable.

“You cannot have a wage structure where some individuals take home Sh2 million in basic salary plus allowances while others take home Sh23,000.”

He went on to dare President Uhuru Kenyatta to lead the way in taking the pay cut.

Maanzo implored the national government to review its budgets and review its allocations to certain sectors that were in dire need of resources.

While stating that Members of Parliament could live comfortably with half their salaries, Namwamba said the two houses should take the matter seriously as they are partly responsible for the increased wage bill.

However on questioning a section of ODM MPs over whether they would support the Namwamba motion, they reluctantly said they would pronounce themselves on the matter once it was brought before the House.

“That is a bridge we will cross when we get there. You must understand that there are several proposals–we have also given the government the option to cut monies in NYS, reallocate the laptop money and cut on corruption,” said Opiyo Wandayi (Ugunja).

President Kenyatta Sunday told teachers to go back to class insisting the government did not have money to effect the 50-60 percent award by the Employment and Labour Relations Court.
