Use your numbers to boost gender equity, Uhuru tells women

Saying men and women have a role to play in development, the President emphasized that any delay “in the empowerment of women is a delay in the development of the nation”.

“Gone are the days when empowering women was viewed as a favour to our women. An attempt to make us look good. More than anywhere else in the world, our African women must be given the prominence that they so rightfully deserve,” he said.

He said that was why one of the basic aims of the Africa Union’s Agenda 2063 is achieving people-driven development by placing gender equality at the core of development.

“That is why Africa prioritised five key areas: Health, Education, Economy, Peace and Security, and Agriculture. In truth, these resolutions capture the basic view of the continent about how best to proceed in such a grave matter,” he said.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru said the meeting is taking stock of the road women have travelled since the international conference in Nairobi in 1985.

She said Kenya has made progress in women empowerment from increased enrolments in schools to participation of women in all scopes of development.

The CS said: “In Kenya, women empowerment is a mandate and not an alternative.”

Kenya Women Parliamentarians Association chairperson Cecily Mbarire cited several Kenyan women who have championed women issues, and commended First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s ‘Beyond Zero” campaign.

Ambassadors Liu Xianfa (China), Erasmo Roberto Martinez (Mexico) and Lars Bredal (Denmark’s Charge d’ affairs) addressed the conference on the steps their countries are taking to promote gender equality.
