Teachers boycott work as public schools re-open

“The strike in January was never declared illegal and there have been a continuation of activities arising from the same strike up to where we are so resumption of the strike is an automatic option that does not require any notice to the government. They should stop playing mischief and games in this matter, pay teachers by midnight today and this is not a veiled threat; it is real,” he said.

“And the strike is legal and so those who are not in school today are protected and if they opt to engage in full scale activities tomorrow, they are protected. We have called the National Executive Council for a meeting in Wednesday at 10am to assess the development from where we were from the Supreme Court (ruling) up to where we shall be on Wednesday.”

He called on teachers not to go to school until you are fully paid.

“You will wait for your salaries at the various banks until you are fully paid and until TSC complies because we have been subjected to servitude for far too long and what the court has given you is your right and you must defend it. The day you have been paid in full is the day you will go back to class,” he said. “TSC, you have up to midnight to comply and no amount of threats will stop teachers from taking any decisive action because that is the right granted to them in the Constitution.”

The Senate Chairman of Education Daniel Karaba also stated that the National Government must increase teachers’ salaries as per the court ruling.

The Senator while referring to the Sh1 billion given to Mumias Sugar Company as a bailout challenged the Treasury to honour the court ruling to avoid another teachers strike.
