Former Luo Council of Elders Chairman Ogalo dies

RIAGA-OGALOKISUMU, Kenya, Aug 13 – Former Luo Council of Elders Chairman Meshack Riaga Ogalo passed away on Wednesday night at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Ogalo who suffered health complications had maintained that he was the bona fide chairman despite his ouster in the year 2010 and his position taken over by his deputy Willis Opiyo Otondi.

Kasipul MP Oyugi Magwanga, where Riaga hails from, said Ogalo passed away before midnight and had been in and out of hospital.

“He was admitted at a Kisumu hospital and his conditioned worsened after discharge. The family took him to Kenyatta Hospital where he passed on,” he said.

Ogalo accused Raila Odinga of orchestrating his ouster and in the run up to the last General Election, chose to work closely with William Ruto, now the Deputy President.

He fought in the corridors of justice to remain the Luo Council of Elders Chairman dismissing his ouster as null and void.

The court granted his plea but the ouster team failed to recognise him.

He was an acquaintance of the late Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi and at one time led a team of elders from Kenya to visit Gaddafi who was also the patron of the House of Traditional African Elders.

Ogalo supported Gaddafi’s dream of a united Africa where Gaddafi was to be the first chairman until he was deposed and killed.

Ogalo was one time elected a councillor in the defunct South Nyanza County Council.
