NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 9 – Eugene Wamalwa has finally been sworn-in as Cabinet Secretary for the recently created Water and Irrigation Ministry.

Wamalwa was sworn-in Thursday morning at State House Nairobi in a ceremony witnessed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Wamalwa was nominated on April 17 to head the ministry, which President Kenyatta said was important in consideration that water was the basis of agricultural development.

The President further explained his government was committed to initiating a legal, institutional and regulatory framework required to transform the water sector to ensure that it is accessible and affordable across the country.

Wamalwa previously served as Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister in the Grand Coalition Government headed by former President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga.

Monica Juma who had been nominated as Secretary to the Cabinet at the same time as Wamalwa was however rejected by Parliament’s Committee on Administration and National Security and Committee on appointments.

MPs approved Wamalwa’s appointment on June 10.
