The ‘flying’ vehicles of Meru County

“I was involved in an accident. I was near a police stop at the middle of the road, so when I got there, I was at the middle of the road I tried to overtake the car and by bad luck there was an oncoming vehicle,” he recalled.

In June 2012, two students were injured when a speeding miraa vehicle hit them, as they were crossing a road at Thiba village, Mwea, Kirinyaga County.

On March 24, 2015, two people died after a pick-up ferrying miraa collided with a lorry near Wamumu in Mwea, Kirinyaga County. A week after, eight more people were killed in a grisly accident after another pickup ferrying miraa to Nairobi collided with a lorry and a matatu along the Meru-Embu highway.

On May 7 this year, a miraa driver died on the spot in Naromoru town, along Nyeri-Nanyuki road when transporting miraa to Nairobi.

There are measures put in place to manage speeds on Kenyan roads, but the worry is, accidents caused by miraa vehicles are still happening.

Miraa drivers are still over speeding, is there too much speak about managing speeds without action?

People using the route to and from Maua are urging their miraa drivers to at least observe decency to ensure lives are not lost and also cut down on the number of accidents involving their cars.

They are also urging the government to tame reckless drivers.
