NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 25 – The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has appointed Nancy Macharia as its new Secretary/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to replace Gabriel Lengoiboni whose term is set to expire on Tuesday next week.

In a statement, TSC chairperson Lydia Nzomo indicated that Macharia emerged top among the four shortlisted candidates during interviews conducted on Monday and Tuesday.

“Nancy has 28 years experience in the education sector having joined the TSC as Assistant Teacher. She rose through the ranks to the position of Director, Teacher Management. This experience will, no doubt, be invaluable in her new role as the Chief Executive Officer,” she stated.

The recruitment process started In May this year when the position was advertised and as a result attracted 69 applicants from which four were shortlisted.

Nzomo pointed out that the new CEO will hold the office for a term of five years but shall be eligible for re-appointment for another term subject to satisfactory performance.

“She will be required to drive the commission’s reform agenda which is anchored on four key pillars; security and safety of school children; provision of quality education through institutionalization of the teacher appraisal system; full professionalization of the teaching service by minimizing cases of professional misconduct and paradigm shift in service delivery by the secretariat staff at all levels of the commission,” she stressed.

She stated out that some of her duties will include implementing the decisions of the commission in addition to supervising staff.

“In line with Section 16 of the Teachers Service Commission, She will be responsible to the commission and will, therefore, execute the decisions of the commission. In addition, she will supervise staff of the commission, facilitate, coordinate and ensure the execution of the commission’s mandate and perform other duties as may be assigned by the commission,” she said.

Lengoiboni has held the post for 11 years.

Nancy is the 9th Commission Secretary/Chief Executive Officer after Jesse Muhoro (1967 to 1974), James Kamunge (1974 to 1977), Duncan Mwangi (1978 to 1980), Joseph Lijembe (1980 to 1982), Jackson Kang’ali (1982 to 1998), Benjamin Sogomo (1998 to 2003), James Ongwae (2003 to 2004) and the current outgoing boss Gabriel Lengoiboni.
