Administration Police Spokesman Masoud Mwinyi told Capital FM News that the arrests followed a tip off from the public.
He explained that during the operation, an assortment of firearms and ammunition were recovered.
“We received a tip off from the public and our officers responded promptly. As a result, they were able to arrest three suspects as part of a broader operation in the region to flush out Al-Shabaab militia,” he stated. “During the operation, we managed to recover a number of firearms and assorted rounds of ammunition.”
He commended the public for its assistance to the police and emphasised the need for more effort to ensure terrorism does not thrive.
“We would like to commend members of the public for the role they played in the operation. As a result of this, we managed to prevent any activity that these three suspects may have been planning. I would also like to laud our officers from their quick response to this information. This underscores the need for everyone to do their part in the war against terrorism,” he stated.
There have been a number of terror attacks in Garissa with the major one taking place at the Garissa University College where 148 people – mostly students – were massacred in April this year.
President Uhuru Kenyatta vowed the severest action against terrorism never seen before in the country after the attack.
And following his statement, the Kenyan military carried out air strikes on key Al Shabaab bases in Gedo region, killing dozens of the militants who are opposed to the incursion in their country.
After the attack at the Garissa University College, five suspects were arrested and last week, they were charged with committing the terrorist act at the college.
The five had been in police custody for two months having been arrested less than 48 hours after the early morning attack. READ: Garissa college siege ends, leaving 147 dead.
The prosecution had sought for more time to conclude investigations while the suspects remained in police custody given the seriousness of the charges they are facing.
Mohamed Ali Abikar, Hassan Edin Hassan, Sahal Diriye Hussein, Osman Abdi Dagane and Rashid Charles Mberesero, a Tanzanian national, denied conspiring to commit a terrorist act and the 148 separate counts of committing a terrorist act which resulted in the death of 142 Garissa University College students and six members of the security forces.
The massacre was Kenya’s deadliest attack since the 1998 bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi, and the bloodiest ever assault by the Al Shabaab militants.
A Sh20 million bounty has been offered for alleged Al Shabaab commander Mohamed Mohamud, a former Kenyan teacher believed to now be in Somalia and said to be the mastermind behind the Garissa attack.
