NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 3 – Flooding in Nairobi after heavy rains on Tuesday night has left three people dead.

They include a woman and her three-year-old son who were swept away by flood waters in Kayole.

Also killed was an eight-year-old boy also from the same area, according to police.

Kayole Police Chief Ali Nuno confirmed the incident saying the bodies had been retrieved and taken to the morgue.

“We suspect they tried to cross a flooded section on foot when they were swept away and drowned. There was also massive damage,” he said.

The rains started on Tuesday evening when most city residents were leaving offices leaving them stranded.

There were long queues in almost all bus terminuses and heavy traffic in routes heading in and out of the Central Business District.

Most drainage systems have improved following earlier rains that led to massive flooding within the city according to police.
According to the meteorological department the rains are expected to continue for the next couple of weeks.

A Sh50 million emergency fund has since been established by Governor Evans Kidero to unclog blocked drainages and improve water flow.
