Women MPs plan own bill to quell gender rule row

“Mr Speaker, give us a break!” she angrily said.

On the issue of the bloated wage Bill resulting from accommodating more female legislators, Nyokabi said when the constituencies were increased from 210 to 290, the country accepted to pay the 80 new members who were mostly male, and could not comprehend the ‘hullaballoo’ over their demands.

“If we have more women voted in the 290 slots, then we will not need to top up. Kenyans have the option not paying for the nominations by voting in women,” she added.

While responding to the claims by the women legislators, Muturi stated that his views were only meant to enrich the debate.

“Members of the House including women MPs will make decisions during passage of the requisite law. My views don’t count since I have no vote,” he said.

The Supreme Court had given Parliament until August 27 this year to come up with legislation on the two thirds gender rule to be implemented in the 2017 General Election.
