Historic night as students interact with their mentor, Uhuru Kenyatta

Christine Lekishon from Asumbi Girls said it was her first time in Nairobi and felt delighted she had been booked to stay at State House for a week.

She spoke about what she learnt from their interaction with top military chiefs earlier in the afternoon when they toured the Defence headquarters.

During the visit to the Department of Defence headquarters, they were hosted by Chief of the Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe.

They got the opportunity to ask him questions about the military and what it entails to serve as a Kenyan soldier.

“Now I know being a soldier means that one has to sacrifice to defend our country and I urge everyone to sacrifice to build our nation,” she said.

Another girl got the President’s total attention as she told him of how he has inspired her twice.

First, she amused the President and got him to ask, “who told you that?” when she narrated a story about the President’s school days.

“A teacher used to tell us how you were once bullied by senior students and when you informed your father who was the President at the time, he told you to learn to fight your own wars. That was very inspiring,” she said.

She added that the President has inspired her again through the PURES program.

Another girl said she has learnt many lessons from the President’s life story.

“I once saw a photo of you as a young boy where you were pictured with your father, former President Moi and former President Kibaki in one room and looking at it, you did not even know what was going on and I am sure you did not know that you will be President one day,” she said, adding that the photo had taught her, “to always look at the bigger picture of her dreams”

Such were the voices of inspiration and optimism that beamed in State House Thursday night on the last day of the one-week mentorship program.

And it was a memorable night for the students as well as the President, who himself was captivated by the clarity with which the young boys and girls delivered their views on how they view the roles they should play in society.

As one of them put it, they “are not the leaders of tomorrow but they are leaders of today.”

The climax of the VIP sojourn for the group was on Thursday morning when they were invited and hosted by the President to sit inside a full Cabinet meeting.

Other institutions they toured included Parliament, the Judiciary and the National Youth Service Headquarters.

They also visited the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government where they were hosted by the Cabinet Secretary, Joseph Nkaissery.
