MIAMI, United States, Apr 7 – Three men were hospitalized after being attacked by thousands of bees when they tried to extract honey from their hive, authorities in the state of Florida said Monday.

The three were expected to survive the attack, which occurred Sunday in the town of New Port Richey.

“At least one of the individuals was trying to scrape the side of the hive for some honey,” Pasco County spokesman Doug Tobin told the ABC television network.

The three men were each stung about 50 times. A fourth person, a woman, also was stung but suffered no ill effects.

Firefighters had to use their hoses to disperse the bees.

“It took about 15 minutes of spraying before they could get them safe into the ambulance,” Alice Osteen, a neighbour, told ABC.

About 30,000 bees were estimated to be in the hive, which was in a tree in a residential area.

Experts were called to remove the hive.
