NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 24- The State agency tasked with researching on crime has challenged victims of gender violence to always report them to authorities in a bid to deter future incidences.

The National Crime Research Centre director John Onyango on Tuesday stated that the vice can only be confronted if victims report to relevant authorities and culprits are punished.

He specifically says women have become prone to attacks more so from their male counterparts.

“Whereas some of the cases have been reported by women who know their rights, many still go unreported. We hope victims of these crimes get courage to report,” Onyango explained.

This comes as two Member of Parliament continue to face gender violence allegations.

Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti has been accused of assaulting and raping a 29-year old married woman while another MP Elisha Busenei of Turbo was accused by Taita Taveta Woman Representative Joyce Lay of sexual harassment while on a trip to Japan.

Mwiti has been accused of molesting the woman at his private office in Westlands on Saturday night when she had gone for a business meeting.

The woman is currently admitted to the Nairobi Women’s Hospital.

“Those allegations are false,” he said while explaining that police were already investigating the matter and soon, the truth would emerge.

The MP recounted that he met the woman on Saturday at around 6pm at Pizza Garden in Westlands before moving to a pub he owns opposite Krishna Centre at around 9.30pm.

The legislator further claimed that they did not go to his office on the material day as alleged by the woman. “No, I don’t have an office opposite Bandari in Westlands.”

“I have an office in Krishna Centre on 3rd floor. The bar is opposite Krishna Centre and there is no time she went to my office that day,” he explained.

Mwiti spent the night at the Parklands police station on Monday before the officers investigating the incident picked him up for the Government Chemists at Kenyatta National Hospital.

“I am complying with the police requirements to ensure the investigations go on well so that the truth can be known,” he stated. “I am here as a lawmaker and a law abiding citizen…I have to comply with police orders.”

Dr David Mwangi Muchiri of Fig Tree Medical Centre has since been questioned over the allegations that he forcefully carried out HIV tests to the 29 years old lady before the claimed raping took place.

“The doctor came and recorded his statement last night (Monday night) before he was allowed to go. We have also recorded statements from a number of people,” said Gigiri head of CID Daniel Kandie.

He did not however divulge of what the doctor said.
