NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 15 – Seven hundred and fifty officials were dispatched Sunday to various polling centres in the vast Kajiado Central constituency ahead of Monday’s by-election.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba says of this number, 204 are security officers, 300 clerks, 102 presiding officers and a similar number of deputy presiding officers.
One hundred and twenty vehicles have been hired to ferry materials to polling centres.
Front runners in the contest are Jubilee Alliance Party candidate Patrick ole Tutui and ODM’s Elijah Memusi.
Both President Uhuru Kenyatta and CORD leader Raila Odinga were involved in campaigning for their respective candidates.
The seat was declared vacant after President Kenyatta appointed Joseph Nkaissery as the Interior Cabinet Secretary.
While ODM has insisted that the position belongs to them since Nkaissery was voted in through the ODM party ticket, Jubilee coalition has expressed optimism of capturing the seat.
Both coalitions have carried out aggressive campaign to ensure they get the seat.
On March 9, President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto led Jubilee Alliance Party leaders on a tour of the constituency where they asked residents to vote for the party’s candidate.
“We need leaders in Parliament who are ready to work for the people and not those who will engage in needless wrangles,” President Kenyatta said.

The Deputy President also urged the residents to vote for the Jubilee candidate because he will be part of a dependable team that is motivated by a desire to develop the country.
“The difference between Jubilee and CORD is like day and night. While Jubilee leaders are busy working for Kenyans, all that CORD politicians do is engage in insults, demonstrations and throwing stones,” he said.
