NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 10 – Three people, among them a police officer arrested on Tuesday morning as they tried to sell a rhino horn to a KWS officer in Nairobi, will remain in police custody until March 12.

This was after the prosecution in a Kibera court opposed their plea to be released on bond for the offence of being in possession of a rhino horn.

The officer is attached to the Industrial Area Police Station in Nairobi and is believed to be part of a poaching cartel in the country, mainly offering security.

The police officers is said to have resisted arrest by KWS officers but was later subdued.

The three suspects were charged with four counts of being in possession of wildlife trophy contrary to Section 95 as read with section 105 of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013 and also dealing in wildlife trophy contrary to Section 84(1) as read with section 92 and section 105 of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013.

The other charges include obstructing persons in the execution of their powers to arrest contrary to section 101(b) of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013 and using a government firearm for an unlawful purpose contrary to section 26(A) of the firearms Act (Cap 114) Laws of Kenya.

On March 3, President Uhuru Kenyatta called for a collective approach from all stakeholders in fighting the poaching menace in Kenya and the African continent.

President Kenyatta who spoke at the Nairobi National Park where he set ablaze 15 tons of ivory, said the government will burn all illegal ivory stockpiles in the course of the year.

Tough laws have also been adopted to enhance the war against poaching.
