Teachers’ unions lodge pay proposal with court

“A simple comparison with staff at the TSC Secretariat shows gross disparity in the basic pay enjoyed by TSC staff and that paid to teachers,” they complained.

Allowances being sought by the teachers include housing allowance, responsibility allowance which is usually given to teachers with additional duties, annual leave allowance, hardship allowance, hazard allowance among others.

On most of their demands, the unions demand that the review should be backdated to July 1, 2013.

They urged the government to look at the demands of teachers as an investment and not as an expense because they had the most important role of imparting knowledge in children.

“The demand for salary increment by teachers is meritorious. Teachers work beyond the normal working time and they don’t just do work within the classroom, they also take home tasks including making lesson plans, making test questions, checking test papers amongst others,” read part of the conclusion.

And in their closing remarks, the union heads described education as the best investment the government could pursue as quality education created jobs, fought poverty and helped the country in achieving financial freedom.

Last week, Justice Nduma Nderi directed the feuding parties to present proposals on salaries to guide the court in determining the salaries after an eight-hour negotiation.

The Teachers Service Commission is expected to file its memorandum by January 25 with the Central Planning and Monitoring Unit and the SRC expected to file their report within 10 days from January 26, 2015.

Meanwhile, over 1,000 teachers from three counties in North Eastern Kenya have stated that they will not resume teaching in their respective schools owing to security concerns.
