‘Wazembe’ raises storm at Ruto ICC hearing

Whereas Khan translated the word ‘Wazembe’ to mean lazy people the witness singled it out as the inciting word that Ruto used.

“Mzembe means lazy,” Khan posed.

“No. It is not the right word to you use. Wazembe is an abusive word, it is commonly used, it is not lazy as it is referred,” the witness responded when Presiding Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji asked him to tell what the word meant.

“I cannot talk directly but is a commonly used word when you are abusing a person. It is the wrong word to use,” the witness explained.

Khan further exhibited a newspaper clipping which reported that ‘No’ politicians (those opposed to the referendum like Ruto) stormed out of memorial service after they failed to get a chance to address the crowd.

The leaders included Charles Keter and Gideon Moi who were all against the referendum like Ruto.

It was Khan’s argument that not all high level politicians who attended Koitalel’s memorial service got a chance to speak to contest the witness’ position that the yes (banana) politicians were the only ones not allowed to address the crowd of about 30,000 people present during the memorial.
