KISUMU, Kenya, Dec 28 – Police in Kisumu have arrested a suspect who has allegedly impersonated televangelist Dr. Edward Owuor of The Ministry of Repentance and Holiness Church.

The 19-year-old man had created a Facebook account using Owuor’s name  and solicited funds for an upcoming Nakuru crusade from well-wishers abroad.

According to Pastor Gilbert Kimutai, the suspect has been on the run after impersonating Owuor.

“This is one of the many people who have been impersonating the man of God on social media and he has been running this account for some time; he was using this to solicit for money from abroad,” Kimutai said.

He said the suspect was tracked down to Kisumu where he was arrested by the police and is undergoing interrogation.

Addressing a press conference in Kisumu, Kimutai said the first case was reported in Nakuru where he is likely to face charges of cyber crime among others.

The case came to the fore when somebody in Argentina read the suspect’s online plea and promised to send 7,000 Euros but later called the church to inquire if she could double the amount.

“We came to know about it when the lady in Argentina called us because this guy was talking about the meeting that was coming up in Nakuru and she wanted to support.”
