NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 1- The Government on Monday appointed Professor Peter Mbithi the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi.

He will replace Professor George Magoha who has served as the institution’s Vice Chancellor for 10 years.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, the Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi said Mbithi will be accountable and responsible for matters relating to the mandate of the council.

The appointment is contained in a letter dated December 1, 2014 signed by Professor Kaimenyi.

“In exercise of the power conferred to me by section 39(1) of the Universities Act, 2012, I hereby appoint you as the Vice-Chancellor, University of Nairobi for a period of five years with effect from 6th January, 2015,” the letter reads in part.

The letter of appointment has been copied to the two Principal Secretaries in the Ministry of Education, the Chancellor, University of Nairobi, and the Chairman of the Council, University of Nairobi.
