Kajiado Central by-election slated for March 16

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 30 – A by-election to elect a successor to Major-General (rtd) Joseph Nkaissery as Kajiado Central MP will be held on March 16 next, year according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Nkaissery vacated the seat last week to take up appointment as Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government.

“The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) wishes to inform the public that the Kajiado Central Member of National Assembly by-election will be held on Monday, March 16, 2015,” IEBC Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager, Tabitha Mutemi said in a statement.

The commission now wants those wishing to vie as Independent Candidates to submit their symbols and seek clearance from the Registrar of Political Parties on or before January 26, 2015.

It has also directed all Political Parties wishing to participate in the by-election to complete their nominations of their candidates on or before January 29.

The political parties must also determine intra-party disputes arising from party nomination of their candidates before the given date.

“The delivery of nomination papers to IEBC will take place on 16th and 17th February 2015. The official campaign period will commence on 18th February, 2015 and end on 14th March, 2015,” she explained further.

Nkaissery resigned on December 19, and the law requires that a by-election is held within 90 days from the occurrence of a vacancy.

Kajiado Central Constituency consists of five County Assembly Wards, with a total of 39,545 registered voters.
