The inaugural edition that drew over 20,000 participants raised Sh200m/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, December 23 – The second edition of the First Lady Half Marathon targets to host over 50,000 participants for the event that runs March 8 at Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens.

Organisers for the annual event aimed at raising awareness and seeking sponsorship for Her Excellency Margret Kenyatta’s Beyond Zero campaign on Tuesday opened registration for the marathon beginning with Nairobi and Mombasa.

Registration is ongoing at Nairobi Sports House, various Nakumatt and Uchumi supermarkets or online on the website www.beyondzero.or.ke with participants paying Sh1, 500 (USD 16.6).

The inaugural edition that drew over 20,000 participants raised Sh200m (USD 2,213,127.96) that purchased equipped mobile clinics for all the 47 counties across the country.

So far the First Lady has delivered 16 mobile clinics to Counties based on the intensity of HIV/AIDs, maternal mortality and child mortality burden in Taita Taveta, Narok, Samburu, Homa Bay, Baringo, Isiolo, Wajir, Turkana, Marsabit, Kitui, Kiambu, Siaya, Kisii, Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale County.

Statistics indicate that 108,000 children die in Kenya every year before their fifth birthday, with 65 per cent of them dying before their first birthday.

It’s also estimated that there are 72,000 infant deaths in Kenya annually, while 48,000 deaths occur during the first 28 days offline annually.

Henry Kiprono and Leonida Mosop won the first edition that saw the First Lady enter into history books to finish the race in 3:46:00 and went on to take part at this year’s London Marathon.
