AU Commission’s Mwencha says ICC is a failure

Mwencha however pointed out that the bid by African countries to withdraw from the Rome Statute of the ICC had not been brought before the African Union Summit saying the agenda had already been set.

He however could not comment on whether or not he supported the withdrawal saying it was not his place to decide.

He also raised concerns’ over the lack of representation of the African Union in the UN Security Council saying it was uncalled for since most of the issues being handled by the council affected Africa.

“If indeed you have to talk of any organ that represents people you should see it reflected by its own constitution—you cannot talk of a Parliament of a country that excludes a segment of a country—that exactly what the UN Security Council is certain parts of the world are totally absent from the security council, it is a right that everybody should be seen at that table–if indeed the Security Council has to play that role,” stated Mwencha

He was speaking during the official launch of the 2nd Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union at a Nairobi Hotel which also attended by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed.

Mohamed who issued the key note address urged the newly sworn in members to use the platform to market the policies and programs of African Nations to enhance progressive development of the continent.
