53 MRC suspects charged over raid on AP camp

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 22 – Fifty-three suspects have been charged at the Mombasa High Court in connection with a raid at Kinarani Administration Camp where a police officer was killed.

Ten of the accused were charged with the murder of Corporal Athanus Mutisya, robbery with violence and causing grievous harm to two Administration Police constables during the attack two weeks ago.

They were also charged for being members of outlawed Mombasa Republican Council in Kilifi County.

They however denied the charges before Mombasa Resident Magistrate Richard Odenyo.

“We have intelligence report that the accused persons had issued similar threats during the Christmas festivities .Your honour I plead that they be denied bail and remand them in police custody for 10 days,” said State Counsel Alexandar Mututi who indicated that the 10 were dangerous and if released will cause havoc in Kaloleni and entire Coast region.

He told the court that the accused persons are dangerous having been so daring to attack an AP camp and killing a police officer.

Jacob Chanze ,Safari Nzaro ,Kerega Nza,Kazungu Charo ,David Kombe ,Kazungu Katana ,Emmanuel Chai ,Kahidi Saidi were remanded at the Shimo la Tewa prison until January 22, 2015 when the court will rule the on bail.

According to the charge sheet the 10 were armed with crude weapon and stole the G3 rifle from the slain officer.

The other 43 were charged with being members of an organized criminal group namely MRC between December 14 and 16 within Kaloleni.

Lawyers representing them led by Wycliff Makasembo said the accused are entitled for bail as per the Constitution. He said the state is being alarmist to link them to the murder of police officer to deny them bond.

The suspected were nabbed in an operation being conducted in forests within Kilifi County

The forests are said to be MRC hideouts.
