NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 10 – Ten people including five members of a family died in two separate road accidents which occurred on Boxing Day.
The family of five drowned after the vehicle they were travelling in lost control and plunged into a man-made dam in Midoti area of Migori County.
Two women and three children who are close relatives died when the vehicle they had travelled in from Nairobi on Thursday night lost control and plunged into the man-made dam a few metres from their home at about 10pm.
Police are still trying to remove the wreckage from the six metre deep dam.
In another accident which occurred along Bungoma-Mumias Road three people died on the spot, while two others died while undergoing treatment in hospital.
Witnesses say the accident which occurred at Fremus area on the highway happened after the saloon car they were travelling in had tyre burst and lost control causing it to veer off the road. The vehicle rolled several times before it rammed into a motorcyclist who had parked by the side of the road.
Police are looking in claims that the driver of the saloon car might have been under the influence of alcohol.
46 worshipers of Legio Maria Church were admitted with minor injuries in hospitals in Kisumu and Siaya counties after an accident near Sinaga along Luanda-Siaya.
Gem OCPD Wambua Mutiso says the worshipers were travelling from Nairobi to Nzoia for annual Christmas prayers when their bus belonging to Transgulf Company developed mechanical problems and veered off the road before plunging into a ditch.
Mutiso said the bus was carrying 52 passengers and the 46 injured were taken to Sagam Hospital, Siaya Referral Hospital and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital in Kisumu.
