Dar es Salaam, Nov 10 – Tanzania’s President Jakaya Kikwete has undergone successful prostate surgery at a US hospital, the presidency said Monday.

“The procedure which took 90 minutes at dawn on Saturday at Johns Hopkins Hospital Baltimore, Maryland, was successful and doctors say the president is now doing well,” a statement said.

Kikwete, 64, left the East African country for the United States on Thursday for what had been described as a routine medical check-up.

He became Tanzania’s fourth president in 2005 and his second and final five-year term is scheduled to end in October 2015.
