NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 28 – The Registrar of Political Parties (RPP) has been restrained from effecting Monday’s suspension of Senators Boni Khalwale, Martha Wangari and party chairman Hassan Osman (Nominated MP) from the United Democratic Forum (UDF).

The Political Party Tribunal also barred party leaders Musalia Mudavadi, his deputy Jeremiah Kioni, Petronilla Were and Kassim Sawa from convening any meeting of the National Governing Council and National Delegates Congress.

Three UDF Nairobi County officials Wycliffe Oyondi Okeo, Caroline Muthoni Boy and Pauline Achieng Abetto moved to court on Tuesday seeking orders to bar the RPP from effecting the changes passed at a meeting held on October 27.

Tribunal chairman Kyalo Mbobu said the expulsion of Senators Khalwale (Kakamega), Wangari (Nominated) and MP Osman by the party’s National Delegate Conference should not be effected pending the hearing and determination of the application.

UDF Delegates on Monday endorsed the expulsion of Senators Khalwale and Wangari from the party.

The National Delegates Conference (NDC) also approved the expulsion of suspended party chairman Hassan Osman and replaced him with Webuye East MP Alfred Sambu.

Mudavadi is the party leader, with former Kieni MP Kioni as his deputy.

UDF has been mired in a leadership tussle pitting party leader Mudavadi against suspended former national chairman Hassan, after the latter called a meeting last month to remove him for blocking the re-branding of the party to Amani National Congress (ANC).

The Registrar of Political Parties came to Hassan’s rescue when she overruled the party by citing that UDF’s Constitution does not recognise the positions of party leader and deputy party leader, hence Mudavadi and Kioni are not UDF officials.
