The family said Chepng’etich passed on at the Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi.
“Until her untimely death, Emmy was an electrical engineer with Geothermal Development Company, Nakuru. She was also the captain of the Kenya National Women’s Cricket Team,” the family said in a statement.
The family said burial plans would be announced at a later date.
“We also thank all the friends, relatives and doctors who stood with us during Emmy’s short ailment.”
Chepng’etich led Kenya to the 2009 Africa Women’s Championships title.
Chep-cricket as she was fondly known in the game’s circles then led the team that missed out on the World Cup the following year by a narrow margin after Kenya tied with Zimbabwe in qualifiers played in Nairobi with scores separating the sides.
Leaders led by CORD principal Raila Odinga offered their condolences to the bereaved family.
Deputy President William Ruto also sent his condolences to the family.
