MPs offer to ‘mediate’ spat between police bodies

On his part, Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo said: “The only person who can get worried is one who was involved in some irregularities. But if you did your work in a very professional manner, then it will come out that you are clean.”

The committee chaired by Tiaty Member of Parliament Asman Kamama also sought to find out whether the Police Service Commission had advertised for the repeat of the recruitment exercise as had been claimed.

Kavuludi said the decision to repeat was pending the completion of the court process and thus, recruits from the 36 centres where the recruitment outcome was cancelled, could have another chance during the repeat process.

“We have clarified in the print media of yesterday that the reporting date for successful recruits was 3rd October – and the commission has not changed this because we are still in the process of carrying out a lot of mechanisms and it is subject to the decision of the court,” Kavuludi stated

To curb issues of doctoring of information, the commission has come up with several regulations meant to counter such incidents including having experts drawn from the police service e.g. Doctors. There is also a proposal to increase the number of days of recruitment so as ensure all who are interested have a chance.

The commission also intimated that the lowest admissible grade which is D+ had to be reviewed for some centres where there were challenges for instance access to education. While seconding the decision, the Chair of the committee even listed some areas where he was privy with information that even a grade of D+ could not be found. Kavuludi however pointed out that critics should not be misconstrued to think that only those perceived not have done well were absorbed into the police service that even some high performing students had applied.

The case pitting the Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA against the National Police Service commission (NPSC) will be heard on 11th September.
