Senate resumes sittings in 1960s Chamber

Those who had relocated to the new offices are the Speaker Ekwe Ethuro, Leaders Kindiki (Majority) and Moses Wetangula (Minority) and the Chief Whips Beatrice Elachi (Majority) and Johnson Muthama (Minority).

Deputy Majority Leader Charles Keter and Deputy Majority Whip Mike Sonko have opted to retain their offices at County Hall and KICC respectively.

Senators Wilfred Machage (Migori) and Kiraitu Murungi (Meru) used the occasion to urge Senators to spearhead the national dialogue process being sort by the opposition coalition.

“It will be a shame, if the country burns while we sit and applaud. My stand is known on the call of national dialogue. It is wise for leaders to sit and talk. It is this grandstanding and chest thumping that that will lead our country into chaos.”

Senator Machage pleaded: “Mr. Speaker, allow me to use the floor of this Chamber to appeal to our two leaders (President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga), that they should not put Kenya in danger, that they should not lead Kenya into the abyss”

“Mr Speaker, I will be very happy if we can engage into those negotiations that CORD wants, starting here in the Senate, I would like to engage with Senator Muthama, Senator Wako, Senator Khalwale because those crowds out there, will not solve the issues of insecurity in this country, but we as leaders can,” said Senator Kiraitu who together with Rongo MP Dalmas Otieno pioneered the Inter-Parliamentary Parties Group to push for minimum reforms ahead of the 1997 General Election.
