NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 26 – Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday promised that the national government would increase funding of the county governments to ensure efficiency.

Speaking in Mt Elgon in Bungoma County, the DP said it was in the interest of the national government to ensure county governments are efficient in their functions.

“The essence of devolution is to take services closer to the people and we are committed to ensuring its success,” he said.

Ruto who commended the performance of county governments also noted that it was expected that devolution would face problems as it is a new form of governance.

However, he urged county bosses to ensure they are successful in managing devolution to roll out services closer to the people which is the core plan envisaged.

“County governments across the country have done an exemplary job and we will support them because if devolution succeeds, Kenyans will also succeed,” he said.

Ruto further reminded schools withholding certificates of students due to school balances to release them as directed by the government.

He asked them to recognise that students who had not picked their certificates meant they come from poor backround hence they cannot afford to clear their balances.

“There is no compromise on this. School heads should also be humane and release such certificates as most parents are not able to pay fees for their children. Schools and Government can then explore ways of paying the monies,” he asserted.
