Police recruitment audit a sham – IPOA

He said they had received hundreds of complaints and that they were investigating officers who allegedly took bribes during the exercise.

“This is purely a problem that has been created by the police and the National Police Service Commission themselves because the government on its part has done well in providing resources but the implementers are the one who has done a shoddy job,” he affirmed.

He said failure to repeat the exercise will go ahead to destroy further the already dented police-public relation.

“If you look at the implications of putting in 10,000 police officers in the country who have been corruptly recruited, I can tell you for the fact that the implication to our security and economy is beyond any monetary quantification,” he pointed out.

“We cannot afford at all to get it wrong at this level… if you look at the rating of the National Police Service; it has consistently ranked as the most corrupted institution.”

Njeru said if the exercise was not well carried out, even the perceived police reforms that are ongoing will be adversely hampered.

“Cancelling a few centres will be covering up for other corruptly undertaken processes in the exercise,” he said.

The recruitment aimed to enlist 10,000 recruits who are expected to join the Police Service after a 15-month training period.

A member of the public with complaints had until July 24 to present them to the commission.
