Fresh Sh17bn allocation for laptop project

The CS also announced plans to recruit an additional 5,000 teachers to schools and implement the second phase of commuter allowances in a move aimed at improving the quality of education.

“We have therefore allocated Sh600 million for the upgrading of national schools that started under the economic stimulus project and another Sh2.3 billion for the recruitment of an additional 5,000 teachers. I have also proposed another allocation of Sh2 billion and Sh5.5 billion for the promotion of teachers and implementation of the second phase of commuter allowances,” he said.

Mulili described this as timely but stated that the number of teachers needs to be increased substantially as the number was not adequate.

“The increment is not adequate. We need about 15,000 more teachers. However, the government is headed in the right direction while ensuring that the welfare of these teachers is actually put in place by given them the commuter allowances and all those other benefits and this is a good move,” he stated.
