NAIROBI Kenya, Jun 16 – An Administration Police officer who allegedly shot and killed a football fan in Kisumu over the weekend and injured three others has been remanded in custody.

Isaac Obiero appeared before Kisumu Principal Magistrate Ezekiel Obina on Monday but did not plead to the charge, and is now required back in court within four days.

Kisumu County Police Commander David Ngetich says they asked for more time to allow them carry out further investigations.

“The police have asked for some time for further investigations; we know normally we have to get the post mortem report, assess the status of the accused person and get an analyst’s report on the firearm that was used,” he said.

“The accused has been remanded in police custody pending those investigations.”

He said the gun the officer used must be examined and a post mortem examination conducted on the body before he can answer to the charge.

He also appealed to residents of Manyatta where the incident occurred to remain calm as police carry out investigations.

“We ask people of Manyatta to remain calm; we are accountable of our actions. Anybody who messes up in his or her area of responsibility will be held to account,” he stated.

The officer in the company of two of his colleagues is said to have switched off a television set where residents were watching a World Cup match sparking a protest that led to the shooting.
