IEBC can’t be disbanded at behest of sour losers – Ruto

PODIUM-SPEECHNAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 25 – Deputy President William Ruto has dismissed calls for the disbandment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission saying losers should be graceful in defeat.

Ruto said the culture of disbanding institutions because individuals have lost elections was dangerous for the country.

He was speaking during a fundraising ceremony at Elarai Girls Secondary school, Kajiado County.

Lawmakers Peter Mositet, Kipchumba Murkomen, Beatrice Elachi, Katoo ole Metito and Peris Tobiko also supported the Deputy President.

The MPs asked CORD to look for a better presidential candidate who will honour and respect institutions.

They challenged elected leaders in CORD to resign if they believe the elections were not credible.

“This talk that when we lose elections we must disband the commission must end. It is akin to saying that if you lose a match the referee must not preside over any other match or when you fail in an exam the KNEC must be disbanded,” Ruto said.

Murkomen wondered why CORD was contended with the seats they won in the elections if IEBC was biased.

He asked the party to prepare for further defeats if “they don’t change their coach and leader”.

Mositet said CORD leaders were angry because their attempts to rig the elections using an IEBC official they recorded in a conversation failed.

The MPs said CORD praised IEBC when it won seats but criticized the electoral body when the reverse happened.

The MPs said CORD leader Raila Odinga was involved in appointment of the commission and the party therefore cannot turn around and disown their own.
